How to Start Planning Your Wedding Without Going Crazy

Maybe you are a through and through procrastinator to the core and taking that first step can wait until tomorrow.  Perhaps you are ready to start but don’t know where to begin.  And maybe, you are just overwhelmed by the amount of information and decision making being thrown at you and you're afraid to get it wrong.

Wedding planning can be daunting and frustrating, but it can also be extremely rewarding.  And even if you hire a professional wedding planner, you will still need a starting point.

Begin with what you know!

You've probably been dreaming of this moment for as long as you can remember.  You have a mental picture of your perfect day and have been sidelining ideas for the last few years.  What are your absolutes?  Is it the colors? The type of location (beach, mountain, ranch, etc.)?  The reception band?  The Photographer?   Start there!  You can't pick a date until you know that your must haves are available right? And if the date is your absolute, then you’re probably more flexible on the other areas. Either way, this is a decision you have already made, so set it in stone—feel accomplished and then you can go from there!

Create a wedding planning schedule

“What?!! That sounds like adding more work to an already loaded list of things I have to do!”  I know, so bear with me.  If you take a moment to break down the first things that have to be taken care of and then the next all the way down to what needs to be done day before, you'll already have a clearer picture of what you should be thinking about and focusing on.  This will save you time and frustration in the long run!

There's no reason to be frantically researching and worrying about center pieces when you don't have to have that figured out right away.  Think about it—even if your shoes are extremely important to you, you shouldn't spend the first few months trying to make a decision on them. (Unless you’re planning on making a trip across the country to get them, of course!)

But some things need your attention now, and getting a clear picture of what comes first and what can wait will inevitably make your life so much less frazzled.  You may think that you want to spend your lunch break on Pinterest looking at #ideasforgifttables but the reality is, if you have that item set for closer to the wedding, you can spend more time #pickingyourMOH… Just saying!

Think overall vision, Not devilish details

How much of "your Look" or "theme" has to be chosen and decided from the get go?  The overall feel needs to be known because an island wedding at night is going to require different things from an indoor Mansion wedding right?  And while the flowers don’t necessarily have to be perfected right off the bat, if you don't know if you want an arbor until the last minute, you may not be able to get one…or the decorations for it!

So don’t sweat it! Keep yourself afresh of your original vision and don't get bogged down by the tiny details that really don't matter in the beginning! It can seam ridiculous and make you want to pull your hair out sometimes… But it can be the most rewarding day ever!  It's going to be here before you know it, and then you will be married to the love of your life.  So have fun!
